Travel Insurance Claim: What you should do
If you need to file a claim for travel insurance we can assume how unpleasant it is for you. But looking at the brighter side, you won’t take too much time to recover financially from such a loss if you have travel insurance. However, in a situation when you really do need to make travel insurance claim there are few simple steps that you need to follow.
- Carry 2 copies of your travel insurance policy when you are traveling. Keep these copies separately packed. This package should contain the full name of your travel insurer, the policy that you have opted for, the dates you will be given coverage for, your contact details in full and finally most importantly your unique policy number.
- Contact your insurance company as soon as you think you must make an insurance claim and explain to them the situation. In case of a medical emergency you must immediately let your travel insurance company know.
- If you need to evacuate home for quality care, let your travel insurance company know immediately.
- If you have lost something on your trip or any of your belongings got stolen, you may wait till you come back home from the trip to let your insurance company know. Usually you will have around a month’s time to report for a stolen/lost belonging. When you come back from your trip, you will be required to report the theft/loss to the local police and obtain the report for records.
- For those of you who have your luggage lost by a bus company, an airline or even a hotel, you must obtain a report from them admitting responsibility. It may so happen that the ones responsible for losing your luggage will settle the matter privately. But get this settlement written as well.
- Ask your adjuster may require some information out of you. Cooperate with your adjuster in the verification of your claim.
Settling your travel insurance claim should not take too long. However, different companies function differently. If the insurance company has all the details required they will process the claim in around 10 days. Otherwise if they have doubts regarding your claim, then they may send in an insurance investigator to investigate. In such a case it may take longer to process your claim.
Cases that deal with medical conditions and large amount of money may take a longer time because of the time required to gather all sorts of relevant information. You cannot but be patient here. So, if you have to file for a travel insurance claim, do not waste time thinking. Draw your evidences and contact you travel insurance company as soon as possible.
