Who needs pet insurance?

If you own a pet(s) and love your pet(s) you will want to get pet insurance. Your pet’s health is just like yours. They may fall sick just like you may and may need treatment just like you may do. Treatment for your pet can get quite expensive if you have not yet invested in pet insurance

You obviously do not like to think that this special member of your family might get hurt or sick, but the truth is, this can happen anytime. Pets are like your children – curious and sometimes quite fearless. Hence you cannot always stop them from going everywhere and also protect them from all kinds of dangers every time. Hence, they are bound to fall sick. Having pet insurance will help you in a situation like this. Veterinary care has advanced and has also become expensive. This is where pet insurance comes in.

If you buy pet insurance for your pet, you can make sure that when your pet needs treatment you can be financially prepared. With routine preventive treatments you can make your pet live longer and healthier. As a pet owner you may think that you can take care of your pet’s treatment costs from your day to day expenses. But when you really need to take your pet to the veterinarian you may be in for a surprise when the veterinarian hands over the bill to you.

Your pet deserves the best health care just like you do. It is now up to you to investigate the available options and pick one that suits your budget.

To be able to take care of your pet you may opt from amongst the 3:

  • Self Insure: You may put away a certain sum of money each month as expenses for your pet. This amount may be put away safely in your bank account. However, if you cannot be disciplined in saving money for your pet, you may be inadequately prepared when you need it. Again, you must also have enough time to save a reasonable amount of money before you will need it.
  • Find out if your veterinarian has an in-house medical aid scheme: This practice may not be very popular now. But it was quite well known in the early times. However, if you do find a scheme existing with your veterinarian, you may compare the in-house plan with the plans available commercially with the insurance companies.
  • Commercial pet health insurance: Jut like human health insurance, pet health insurance is meant to provide coverage, but in this case for your pets. This form of insurance may be a little underdeveloped till now but insurance companies are working on developing this type of insurance even better. There have been exponential advances in the field of animal medicine as well as surgery over the past 2 decades. Treatment for certain conditions that were thought to be untreatable is now considered treatable. One in 3 pets every year will need emergency veterinary treatment and 2 out of every 3 pets will experience some significant health problems during their lifetime.

Pet insurance will be a worthwhile investment if you really love your pet. Many pet owners may simply put down their pet’s treatment as secondary because they cannot afford the huge costs. But it is really heartbreaking to see our pets ailing. So, a sensible idea would be to invest in pet insurance if we cannot strictly put aside some amount of money for them every month as savings.
