Types of coverage offered by motorhome insurance policy

RV (Recreational Vehicle) owners often insure their vehicle under their present car insurance policy only to discover later that they don’t have the required specialized coverage for a recreational vehicle. When you have a motorhome (house on wheels), it is advisable that you go for a motorhome insurance policy or a RV insurance policy to get the additional coverage you need.

Types of coverage offered by motorhome insurance

A basic motorhome insurance policy provides you with the following coverage.

  • Collision coverage – You will get coverage if your motorhome gets damaged in an accident that is listed in your policy.
  • Comprehensive coverage – This means that you will get protection for damages to your motorhome caused by sudden or accidental loss due to theft, fire, flood, falling objects, vandalism along with other non-collision losses.
  • Total loss replacement coverage – If your new motorhome gets damaged, then you will get coverage amount equal to the cost of replacing the vehicle irrespective of its price. However, if your vehicle is comparatively older, then you’ll get a cash payout equal to the ACV (Actual Cash value) of your motorhome.
  • Contents coverage – This is one of the most essential coverage offered by a typical motorhome insurance policy. It covers expensive items, such as, your laptops, jewelry, camcorders, clothing, etc. that you often keep in your motorhome.
  • Coverage for attached accessories – A basic policy also covers attached accessories of a motorhome, such as, television antennas, satellite dishes and awnings.
  • Bodily injury liability protection – It means that you will get coverage if you or anyone driving your car is responsible for someone’s bodily injury caused in a covered accident.
  • Property damage liability protection – This policy provides protection if the policyholder or anyone driving the policyholder’s car is liable for any damage to another person’s property.
  • Personal injury protection – PIP or Personal Injury Protection provides coverage for you, your family members or the passengers for rehabilitation, medical expenses or funeral expenses caused by covered accidents. However, the accidents listed in the policy usually vary from one state to another. You will also get coverage for work loss under this policy.

You may also choose some additional motorhome insurance coverage apart from the ones discussed above. This includes uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage and rental reimbursement coverage. It is advisable that you talk to an insurance agent and discuss about the types of coverage before purchasing a motorhome insurance policy.
