A Successful Insurance Agent
Sometimes the very word insurance salesman can make one roll his eyes in anticipation of being sold some useless and unneeded policy. Yet insurance is a necessary part of life in many aspects and insurance agents are a crucial part of this. So how do you become the insurance agent that is equated with a welcome phone call or visit? What type of agent do you want to be and what type of agent do you want for yours? What type of insurance agent is a successful one?
A successful insurance agent remembers to keep the human element first and foremost at all times. An insurance policy is something that people need to buy in the hopes that they never use it. That’s not an easy package to sell. However, remembering the frailty of human nature will always help to keep every type of insurance policy in perspective.
Today you need computers to compete in any business, so an insurance agent with a great website and easy to access account information will do well. When it comes to account management, a lot of people like the choice of internet access to view their policy, pay their bills via credit card and even submit a claim. Being available by electronic means as well as by phone or office gives your clients the choice of comfort and convenience.
Despite the drive for technology, it is always good to know that real people are still in charge of insurance policies. Stay in touch with your clients on a regular basis by phone and my postal mail. Contact does not have to be often, but it should be routine so that you become identified as dependent. For example, every year Sally knows that in mid-December she will receive a calendar from you and that in February you will phone her to say, “Hi.” She also knows that she will get a postcard sometime in April with a summer newsletter to follow in June. Another follow-up call in August and a postcard in October means you have made a personal connection with this client and established yourself as a solid and dependent figure in her life.
You are not just an insurance agent. You are a concerned acquaintance. Keep it professional, but keep it personal and you will find success as an insurance agent.
